What we’re listening to: October

What’s coming out of your headphones this month? This is what is playing in ours…

Elyse is listening to…
Artist: Jenny Lewis
Song name: She’s Not Me
Why I love it: It was a toss up between this song and her other song Head Underwater (or my spectacular mash up of She’s Not Me Underwater Either) but this one wins for the video and for eloquent lyrics about drywall. Her cotton candy vocals will be going “on and on and on and on” through your head for days after you hear it. What a babe, that’s all I have to say.

Mallorie is listening to…
Artist: Ryn Weaver
Song: OctaHate
Why I love it: If you’re looking for some fun indie pop to dance around your house to then look no further. I’ve enjoyed every song on her newly released album “The Fool” so much I even purchased it on iTunes for a whopping $7.99. OctaHate is extra fun though.

Rob is listening to…
Artist: Joanna Newsom
Song: Sapokanikan
Why I love it: If you can get past her voice, this song goes HARD and is way more hip than the Phil & Sebastian’s coffee you’re holding. It’s essentially about how man’s legacies wash-away with time but told through obscure references and melodramatic wind instruments (kind of like Jes and Andi’s twitter accounts during Big Brother season). To bolster my hip claim, the video is directed by none other than Paul Thomas Anderson.

Martha is listening to…
Artist: JR JR
Song: As Time Goes
Why I love it: JR JR used to be known as Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr, but with the release of their latest album they dropped half of their name. I love electronic tinged music, and I love the theme of the song “Sometimes I wish it never changed, but I’m fine – no one can stay the same.” Added bonus: I like listening to this song while sitting on the bus as much as I love running to it. Gotta love multipurpose music!

Andi is listening to…
Artist: Jess Moskaluke
Song: Kiss Me Quiet
Why I love it: I’m a sucker for a good pop country song. This song has me dancing in my car and singing loud, even though I don’t know all the words yet. Plus, Jess Moskaluke hails from my homeland (SK) and she might be my soul sister.

Jes is listening to…
Artist: Ben Rector
Song: Favorite Song
Why I love it: I recently discovered the lyrical joy of Ben Rector. This song is particularly magical because it ties in artist names and songs into the lyrics. Any song that drops I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing is A+ in my books.
