25th Rewind: Our favourite Halloween costumes

It’s almost Halloween. Instead of showing you what costumes may be great this year, we decided to be a little nostalgic and give you a glimpse into our pasts with our favourite Halloween costume.

smurfette halloweenMartha: Smurfette
When you’ve got an aunt who’s talented at sewing, you often end up with some cool hand-me-downs. One of my favourite Halloween costumes was Smurfette – I wish I had this in adult size! Best part of the costume? We didn’t have blue face paint so my mom used eye shadow. Ahh, the 90s.

monopoly burkeMolly: Monopoly
Senior year of university, my friends and I went as classic board games. After running through a long list of options–including the Avengers, American Girl dolls, and Jesus and his disciples (…we all have that one friend)–we landed on board games. We stuck to classic, instantly recognizable games, including Battleship, Operation, Twister, Candyland and Monopoly. We all agreed we would’ve tried to make it more Monopoly and Candyland a bit more colorful if we were recommending the idea to other people, but were really happy with how it turned out!

hw4Elyse: Crayon
My best Halloween costume was the time that me and my sister dressed up like crayons. My mom sewed matching costumes for both of us (I’m the one on the left, that looks like she’s crying with joy) and I’d have to say she did a pretty darn good job. None of that store bought nonsense for us, just the perfect Canadian Halloween costume made to fit over a snow suit complete with a hat that is meant to fit over a toque. Our school used to have a Halloween costume parade where every class got to march around the gym to the Ghostbusters theme, but I can assure you no one strutted more than me dressed as a crayon, bragging about the unique costume my mom had made for me. It was definitely an out of the box idea!

hw6Mallorie: Dice
As I entered my 20s, Halloween became less about going on pub crawls wearing as little as possible (yes, I was a “sexy” cop my first year of university), and more about being comfortable and spending as little money as possible on a costume. And so, in 2011, my bff Dana and I were a pair of dice. Find a relatively large box, grab some white paint and black construction paper, put on a black tank and some leggings and your costume is complete. I will admit that this was short lived because it was so damn uncomfortable and I could barely move my arms, but hey, at least we were just at a house party so the box could just sit in the corner.

hw7Rob: Beaver (not shown: Crest toothpaste)
My favorite costume was when I was 10 and dressed up as a tube of Crest toothpaste (though school administration mistook me as a miniature Klansman… not cool), but couldn’t get the picture. C’est triste. So, my runner-up fav costume was the time I dressed up as a beaver, wore it also at a major Halloween party at an international gay professional conference in Baltimore. I think through context and innuendo, I was definitely the scariest.

hw8Jes: Box of Wine
It was between this and the time I dressed up as a loofah, but I liked that this costume served a purpose. Not only is dressing up as a box of wine easy (paint a box with the words Wine and cut the three holes), but it can also function as a holder and dispenser of your nightly wine ration. Get an actual box of wine, take out the bag of wine on the inside and tape it on the inside of your box…make a small hole for the spout and VOILA – fun times had by all. (Also Note: my wine glass fascinator – a must.)
